Sand Island
Adirondack Trail, State Rt. 30, near Mayfield in Fulton County
This island is well named, being a sandy but lightly wooded former hilltop poking out of the lake, a result of damming that flooded the area in 1930.
The islands in Great Sacandaga Lake are little more than high points that once overlooked the pre-lake river that went through this area. Sandy Island, located off the eastern shore, roughly between North Broadalbin and Benedict, is one of those places that makes for a great picnic and sunbathing spot.
