Also along the Scenic Byway are fabulous paddling opportunities, such as on the Hudson River near Thurman and Warrensburg (by Sally Feihel)
Star Lake
Olympic Byway, State Rt. 3, in St. Lawrence County
Hamlet of Star Lake, near the Wanakena Ranger School, Oswegatchie River and the Five Ponds Wilderness.
The hamlet of Star Lake, in the northwest Adirondack foothills, is a gateway to some of the most unspoiled sections of the Adirondack Park. These include the Oswegatchie River and Cranberry Lake. In the nearby Five Ponds Wilderness Area, if you're a paddler, you can travel beside eskers, long winding ridges of stratified sand and gravel, sometimes miles long. These remnants of glaciation look somewhat like railroad embankments.
The 170-mile Olympic Scenic Byway starts near Lake Champlain at the village of Keeseville in the east, and near Lake Ontario at Sackets Harbor in the west. Between those two great water bodies, the route travels into the Adirondack Mountains and through the heart of the Adirondack Park. As you travel along the byway, you'll see ever-changing vistas of rolling farmland, hills and mountains, and pristine waterways. Whether you're an armchair sports fan, or have dreams of Olympic-style challenges, you'll find opportunities in every season.
